Missing Inmate IN CUSTODY

UPDATE:

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office tracked down Richard Orville Draeger on the 5500 block of Carpinteria Avenue Wednesday night, September 14, 2011. Draeger was arrested without incident and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail at 10:30pm. He is currently being held without bail. Charges are pending related to Draeger’s failure to return to jail.

Sheriff's Office Seeks Missing Inmate

Santa Barbara - September 14th, 2011

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office is currently looking for a jail inmate who failed to return from a medical appointment during a court ordered temporary leave.

Richard Orville Draeger (DOB 10/30/55) had been in custody at the Santa Barbara County Jail since August 10, 2011, for  failure to appear on previous drunk driving charges, and has several pending cases related to drunk driving as well. A judge signed a court order allowing Draeger to leave the jail facility on Tuesday, September 13, 2011, from 8:00am to 12:00pm to attend a medical appointment.

Draeger was signed out of the jail by a friend who was going to transport him to his appointment. However, Draeger’s friend called the Sheriff’s Office after 12:00pm and told personnel that Draeger had not gone to the appointment and had ditched him.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Draeger for violating the court order when he did not return as he had agreed. Draeger also signed an escape clause prior to his release that made it clear that failure to return would constitute an escape, which is an additional violation.
