Day Reporting Center: Informational Meeting
Santa Maria- June 16th, 2010
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office will facilitate an informational meeting at Santa Maria City Hall for residents and businesses who want to learn more about the day reporting center for recently paroled State prison inmates, due to open July 1 in Santa Maria.
The meeting will start at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 22 in the Santa Maria City Council Chambers. Sheriff Brown and Community Solutions, Inc. are scheduled to make presentations. Representatives from California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation, Division of Adult Parole Operations will also be available to answer questions.
The reporting center will be located in an office at 1775 S. McClelland Street. Its role is to assist former inmates who were arrested in the County and then released back into the region after spending time in custody. The center will accommodate up to 50 clients at any given time who will receive services from the programs. Several employees including counselors, job-readiness specialists, a member of the Sheriff’s Office, and a Parole Officer will staff the facility.
At the day reporting center, parolees can receive job readiness training, attend parenting classes, receive education for substance abuse, and develop other life skills.
Participants will be referred to community providers for short-term housing, educational services, vocational training.
The Sheriff’s Office believes the centers will help the problem of County Jail overcrowding by limiting the number of people sent back to jail for new offenses. Lt. Mark Mahurin said the organization that will run the center, Community Solutions, Inc., operates about 30 similar community-based programs for adult offenders around the nation, and has a good record of success in lowering the rate of recidivism.
