Sheriff's Deputies Search for Lost Child in Carpinteria

Carpinteria - August 17th, 2010

Santa Barbara Sheriff’s deputies and the Sheriff’s Aviation Bureau combined to track down a young boy Wednesday afternoon who wandered from his Carpinteria home which sits near rugged open space

At approximately 3:27pm on Wednesday, August 19, 2010 Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 4500 block of Foothill Road to a report of a missing child. Shortly after 3:00pm, the five year old boy and his eight year old sister were playing in the front yard when the sister became thirsty and went inside to get a drink. While inside, the boy apparently wandered away.

The parents say they immediately began to search for the child who had never wandered off before. After twenty minutes and no sign of the boy, they called law enforcement. Deputies began with a search on the ground while they summoned the Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue Team, the Sheriff’s Aviation Bureau and two K9 units.

At approximately 4:40pm a deputy spotted the boy at the bottom of a dried up ravine about one quarter mile away from his home. After being directed to the location, Sheriff’s Copter-2 was able to confirm the child’s whereabouts. Copter-2 was also in position to give the child’s parents a visual indication of where the boy was several hundred yards away.

The boy was in good condition and did not require medical attention. He was reunited with his parents and escorted back to this home.
